The town was named after one of its three founders, M. G. Abernathy. In 1924 Abernathy was incorporated and it had one thousand, five hundred residents by 1926, in addition to having established itself as a grain and cotton hub. There was another boom in Abernathy when oil was discovered nearby in 1946, and by the early 1950s, the town had almost two thousand residents and roughly sixty-five businesses. Today, Abernathy remains a trading and agribusiness center, though still very much a small town.
